We have received a lot of hymns projects over the past few months at the Southern Gospel Music Forum! I will never complain about that since I believe we don't sing the old hymns enough! Most of you know that I am also a big fan of male quartet singing so if you combine hymns and male quartet singing on the same project, you will have my undivided attention!
The Liberty Quartet did just that on their latest project and it is awesome! "Jesus Saves" is a great hymn proclaiming the saving power of Jesus Christ and I love this version! "Have Thine Own Way" is another great old hymn with a prayer to Jesus asking Him to guide us. I have grown up in church and have sung most of these hymns numerous times. One of my favorite congregational hymns is next as the Liberty Quartet sings "My Savior's Love" and "And Can It Be" in a medley. "Battle Hymn Of The Republic" is still one of the all-time great patriotic songs. Unfortunately, not many sing it any more but it is on this project. Another medley is next as the Liberty Quartet combines "I Will Praise Him" and "Doxology."
The tempo picks up on the next medley as the guys combine "When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder" and "Hallelujah We Shall Rise" in a great medley. Most people would probably list this next song as a favorite. The Liberty Quartet does an outstanding job singing "Blessed Assurance." Another of my favorite song while growing up in church was "Trust And Obey." What a great song about trusting in God and then obeying His commands! When I was growing up it was a guarantee that on Easter Sunday morning we would sing "Christ Arose." The guys combine that song with another standard titled "Christ The Lord Is Risen Today" and the resulting medley is awesome.
I love songs that talk about the blessings we receive from the Lord and no song does it any better than the old hymn "Count Your Blessings." Another great performance from the guys. "No Not One" is the next hymn to be featured on the project and this is another good performance. "Crown Him With Many Crowns" is next and this too has always been one of those songs that I love. My only bad memory of that song was trying to learn it on the piano for a piano lesson when I was about 12 years old!! The song remains the standard for worship songs in my book. Next on the project is the "Soldier Medley" which consist of "Leaning On The Everlasting Arms," "Sound The Battle Cry" and "Onward Christian Soldiers." "Abide With Me" ends this project with one of the most beautiful hymns ever written. Kudos to the guys for their exquisite harmonies on this song as well.
The Liberty Quartet can flat out sing four part, male quartet harmony. This project is chocked full of great hymns that many of us grew up with. I can remember many Sunday mornings and nights singing these songs at the top of my lungs in church! Never did I sing them anywhere near as good as they are sung on this recording. Favorites are hard to pick because they are all awesome songs! I finally decided on "Count Your Blessings," "Jesus Saves" and "Abide With Me." This is an outstanding project and I encourage all of you to get a copy and be reminded of these great hymns once again. Also a special thanks to this group for recording a high quality project of the true old hymns of the church! I've played it countless times and I enjoy it more each time.
